30th of May
NAFA Lee Foundation Theatre
RenaIsSancE 2008
Really glad to see my last RISE concert of the year ending with such smashing success. Over hundred hours of rehearsals, 83 performers in all, 4 great pieces, 3 encores, 2 whole hours of fine music, and 1 fabulous conductor.
Rossini William Tel Overture was the best piece of the concert in my opinion, and majority of the audience felt the same, particularly because of the familiar ricochet theme at section H of the piece. Schumann showed off Jon Lim virtuosity and wowed the audience, which is quite a difference compared to the concert with Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra 4 years ago.
Polovtsian Dances by Borodin was a combination of raw vigour and expressive playing. Even though some of the transitions between parts were quite random, but thats the nature of the piece and it still turned out well in the end.
Then as Mr. Sze walked off the stage, the gong suddenly crashed to the floor and the audience went "aw..." The string that attaches the gong to the frame was broken, so we stopped for like 3 minutes until the thing was fixed again.
Britten Young Person's Guide to the orchestra showed off the different instruments on stage but also left the young children from primary school who bought 40 tickets from us dazed. I think they thought there will be a narration, which there wasn't (jack.) But still, the Purcell theme expanded by the magical touch of Britten wowed the audience and brought us 3 encores and a standing ovation.
Encores: (shan't elaborate more)
Magic Flute overture; Mozart
Nimrod, Enigma Variations; Elgar
YPGttO Fugue; Britten
Oh yes the hard work has paid off, and wow Mr. Sze actually acknowledged the sec 4s at the end of the concert. I'm proud to announce that I haven't ponned a single rehearsal without a valid excuse in my 4 years as a RISE member. Can I declare myself as the most hardworking non-exco member?
Ah to quote Jon Shin's blog, "it didn't felt like our last concert". Once a RISE member, always a RISE member. Mr. Sze said that in 2010 there will be a super big concert at the Esplanade to celebrate RISE's 10th birthday, hopefully I'll be invited back to play.
Haha camp tomorrow, really looking forward to an ownage camp like all other RISE camps..
